Balancing Pain Management and Performance in Athlete Care
Erin Dorval, PharmD, highlights the pharmacist’s role in safe athlete pain management, emphasizing appropriate NSAID use, alternative therapies, and emerging trends such as personalized care and wearable-driven performance optimization.
Ahead of the Sports Pharmacy Summit, taking place April 10 and 11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this preconference spotlight features insights from Erin Dorval, PharmD, who emphasizes the critical role pharmacists play in guiding safe and effective pain management for athletes. Dorval highlights that pain should be viewed as a signal rather than something to mask, cautioning against the prophylactic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs before training or competition due to the risk of worsening underlying injuries. She also underscores the importance of appropriate dosing and duration, and of considering alternatives such as topical therapies and nonpharmacologic strategies, such as rest and recovery techniques. For pharmacists entering sports pharmacy, Dorval points to strong pharmacology knowledge, evidence-based decision-making, familiarity with WADA regulations, and effective communication as essential skills.
