Smoking and Pregnancy Raise Diabetes Odds

Gestational diabetes is a risk for pregnant women. Although studies have connected smoking with the risk of type 2 diabetes,the relationship between smoking and gestational diabetes remains unclear. Therefore, the current study analyzed data from 4500pregnant women.

The researchers found that gestational diabetes rates were highest among women who smoked (4.4%) and lowest among the participantswho never smoked (1.8%). The participants who stopped smoking before or during pregnancy had intermediate rates of gestationaldiabetes (1.9% and 2.5%), according to the results of the study reported recently in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
