Two Ohio Northern University pharmacy students have received college of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacists (CPNP) grants to attend the CPNP 2016 Annual Meeting from April 17-20, 2016, in Colorado Springs.

Joelle Hall, a third-year pharmacy student from Strongsville, Ohio, and Rachel Jackson, a fourth-year pharmacy student from Lebanon, Ohio, are 2 of only 20 students nationwide selected to receive the $500 grant.

Hall and Jackson are executive members of the Ohio Northern CPNP student chapter. The group is driven to raise awareness about mental health and substance abuse not only on campus, but also throughout the surrounding community.

CPNP meets monthly to hear guest lectures from experienced pharmacists and psychologists and trained educators from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. From April 4-9, 2016, CPNP will team with other pharmacy organizations on campus to host a mental health week. The event will conclude with “Light Up the Night,” a remembrance and awareness walk for family members of anyone who has suffered from mental illness or substance abuse.

“I want to personally thank CPNP for the grant,” Jackson said. “I am grateful for the contributions being made toward my future and the future of the neurologic and psychiatric profession through this great educational opportunity.”

CPNP was founded in 1998 when a network of pharmacists, formerly known as the Conference of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists, became a professional society. The formation of CPNP was the culmination of the efforts of many pharmacists practicing in the psychiatry and neurology specialties over the past 30 years. CPNP has continued to evolve and grow and has increased membership to more than 1500 individuals.
