Multiple Factors Linked to Readmission After GI Surgery

Multiple factors may be responsible for patient readmissions 30 days following major gastrointestinal surgery, according to a recent study presented on May 19, 2013, at Digestive Disease Week. Steroid use before surgery, operative time, and place of discharge were all identified as risk factors. Researchers also found that patients who experience complications in the hospital are one-third more likely to be readmitted.
