Clinical Trial Finds Botanical Extract Formula Highly Active Against HSV

A botanically-derived formula was found to heal cold sores in as little as 1 day.

Merix Pharmaceutical’s botanical extract formula (Viracea) was found to be highly active against herpes simplex viruses (HSV) 1 and 2 in laboratory testing. A double-blind, placebo controlled, clinical trial was found the formula to heal cold sores in as little as 1 day, according to Merix.

The company specializes in cold sore treatments and development of phyto-pharmaceutical technology. Merix’ patented Echinacea Extract formula is an active ingredient in the company’s "1 day" cold sore symptom treatment (Releev). This product also includes antimicrobial antiseptic benzalkonium chloride for treating HSV-1 and HSV-2.

The cold store treatment is indicated for relieving pain and other symptoms associated with cold sores, such as skin irritation. The OTC product is available in many retail pharmacies and convenience stores.
