Acid Reflux Condition Center Debuts

This month, we introduce a new condition center on www .PharmacyTimes.com covering acid reflux. This common condition is experienced by almost everyone occasionally and, at any given time, up to one-fifth of the population is affected by it. Many factors can contribute to acid reflux, including eating certain foods, heavy drinking, pregnancy, advanced age, and taking certain medications.

Treatments available to treat acid reflux range from antacids to H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Given that all of these medications are available OTC, pharmacists play an important role in guiding patients to appropriate medication therapy as well as addressing patients’ concerns about potential side effects and drug interactions.

Some of the topics that will be covered in the acid reflux condition center include:

  • Extraesophageal manifestation of acid reflux
  • Acid reflux as a cause of nocturnal awakenings
  • Counseling as a means of preventing PPI overuse
