Reports Link Insomnia with Mental Disorders

Primary sleep disorders are categorized into 2 subtypes,dyssomnias and parasomnias. Whereas dyssomnias aredefined by qualitative and quantitative measures of sleep,parasomnias are characterized by problems in the behavioralor physiologic aspect of sleep.

Studies have shown that patients with insomnia are muchmore likely to exhibit a mental disorder. Recent developmentsin the areas of sleep disorders and mental illness have indicatedan association between anxiety or stress, attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder in children, and Alzheimer's diseasein older patients.
