ASHP Releases Second Edition of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy

Article

Updated resource can help improve medication management for seniors.

PRESS RELEASE

As our population ages, pharmacists and other healthcare providers face greater medication management challenges. ASHP has published the second edition of Fundamentals of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy to help improve the often complex care of elderly patients.

In addition to staying on top of new medications and therapies, practitioners with geriatric cases must be prepared to address a wide range of other concerns. Written by geriatric specialists, Fundamentals of Geriatric Therapy provides proven treatment strategies and up-to-date information on major issues that may impact therapy, such as coordination of care across multiple facilities and caregivers. This unique text includes:

Summarized treatment guidelines

Evidence based reviews

Recommendations for frail elderly

Case studies and clinical pearls

Self-assessment questions

The second edition also includes two new or substantially revised chapters. One addresses palliative and hospice care. The other focuses on major infections, with detailed descriptions of the changes in the immune system with age and ways to ensure proper antimicrobial stewardship for older adults, especially those in long-term care settings.

Fundamentals of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy offers a comprehensive overview for all healthcare professionals who treat elderly patients, and can serve as a core textbook for students. Web-based materials such as course outlines and lesson plans will be available to facilitate incorporation of the book into education on geriatric competencies.
