American Pharmacists Month has seen a ton of change in the profession.

October is American Pharmacists Month, and wow what a month in pharmacy news it has been!

Here are highlights of the 4 biggest advancements:

1. CVS Health and Aetna

Various news outlets reported last week that officials with CVS Health have reportedly placed a bid to buy Aetna, one of the nation’s largest health insurers.

2. FDA Approves Herpes Zoster Vaccine

Officials with the FDA have approved the zoster vaccine recombinant, adjuvanted (Shingrix, GlaxoSmithKline) for the prevention of herpes zoster in adults aged 50 years and older. Shingrix is a non-live, recombinant subunit vaccine given intramuscularly in two doses

3. The White House and the Opioid Crisis

President Trump announced that he is declaring a Nationwide Public Health Emergency to address the opioids crisis.

4. Amazon and Pharmacy

According to reporting from CNET who reported on findings from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Amazon has obtained approval to be a wholesale distributor of pharmaceuticals in 12 states: Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon and Tennessee. There is also a pending application for the state of Maine.”
