The Evolving Role of Pharmacists in Cardiovascular Disease Management: Insights and Future Perspectives

Fact checked by: Ron Panarotti

Pharmacists step into cardiovascular prevention with patient education, statin protocols, and new prescribing training—if clinical work gets paid.

In the final episode, The Evolving Role of Pharmacists in Cardiovascular Disease Management: Insights and Future Perspectives, the panelists explored the following critical question:

How do you see the role of the pharmacist evolving over the next 5 years in the management of patients with cardiovascular disease?

Led by Dr. Craig Beaver, Drs. Saseen, Cheeley, and Jurga examined how pharmacists are expected to take on a more proactive role in the management of patients with cardiovascular disease, moving beyond traditional dispensing to actively participating in care planning and medication optimization. They will increasingly support therapy selection, including identifying candidates for novel non-statin LDL-C–lowering therapies and helping navigate access and insurance barriers. Pharmacists will also be integral in monitoring adherence, managing adverse effects, and providing ongoing patient education to improve long-term outcomes. Collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers will expand, positioning pharmacists as key members of the multidisciplinary team driving evidence-based, patient-centered cardiovascular care.

Throughout the conversation, the experts provide a comprehensive reflection on the field and the factors that may shape how clinicians approach care moving forward.
