Article

The grants are designed to foster the creation or expansion of a patient-focused residency program in which faculty will oversee pharmacy students.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation has announced the 12 academic institutions selected for the next wave of funding for the Community Pharmacy Residency Expansion Project (Community PREP). The $1.5 million educational grant program is designed to expand community pharmacy residencies for recent pharmacy school graduates.

The recipients of this round of funding are:

  • Concordia University
  • Creighton University
  • Ferris State University
  • Midwestern University (Glendale)
  • The Ohio State University
  • St. Louis College of Pharmacy
  • SUNY Buffalo
  • University of Charleston
  • University of Kansas
  • University of Kentucky
  • University of Puerto Rico
  • University of Southern California

The NACDS Foundation had previously announced grants to Purdue University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and University of North Carolina in May.

Each of these academic institutions will receive a $50,000 residency grant.

Established in 2010, Community PREP seeks to create 30 new, fully accredited post-graduate community pharmacy residency opportunities through grants to non-profit schools and colleges of pharmacy. The grants are designed to foster the creation or expansion of a patient-focused residency program, where a faculty member or preceptor will oversee the selected pharmacy resident’s learning experience at a pharmacy practice site.

Grant recipients are determined based on the recommendations of an independent review committee comprised of representatives from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the NACDS Foundation.

“The Community PREP grant program was developed to provide expanded opportunities for pharmacy school graduates to pursue community pharmacy residencies and hone their skills in providing patient care services,” said NACDS Foundation President Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM. “I commend these twelve institutions for their patient-focused residency programs which help cultivate pharmacy graduates’ abilities to provide innovation in the delivery of patient care services, for the ultimate advancement of public health.”

Community PREP grant applications are accepted on a continuing basis. Fifteen additional awards will be granted in 2012. For more information on the NACDS Foundation’s Community PREP, click here.
