Implied Vaccine Burden and Associated Misinformation

Panelists discuss how pharmacists can address patients’ growing vaccine fatigue and misconceptions—such as underestimating RSV’s severity in adults or believing it requires multiple doses—by providing clear, consistent education and emphasizing that a single RSV vaccine offers protection against serious illness in high-risk populations.

Many patients perceive a growing “vaccine burden,” especially as new vaccines are introduced alongside existing ones for flu, COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease. This burden stems from both the physical demands of receiving multiple vaccines and the psychological fatigue from frequent messaging around immunization. Because RSV doesn't receive the same media attention or public urgency as flu or COVID-19, some individuals underestimate its severity. Consequently, this perception may lead to lower RSV vaccine uptake, as patients often prioritize vaccines they believe pose a more immediate or serious threat.

Pharmacists play a key role in correcting these assumptions. A major misconception is that RSV only affects infants or very young children. Many adults, including some health care professionals, are unaware that RSV poses serious risks to older adults and those with chronic conditions. Furthermore, confusion exists about the dosing regimen—some patients believe it requires annual boosters or multiple doses, like other vaccines, which can deter them from initiating it at all. In reality, the current RSV vaccine is a single-dose immunization, simplifying the process for both patients and providers.

Combating misinformation requires consistent, clear education. Pharmacists must take the lead by initiating conversations, using trusted resources such as the CDC and providing easy-to-understand vaccine information statements. When patients understand that RSV can be life-threatening in older adults—and that protection is available through a single vaccine—they are more likely to follow through. By proactively addressing misunderstandings and emphasizing individual risk, pharmacists can help increase RSV vaccine acceptance and reduce preventable complications among vulnerable populations.
