New blood glucose monitoring technology allows patients to share information with pharmacists or physicians through an iPhone or iPod.

iBGStar, a blood glucose meter system from Sanofi US, allows patients to upload critical data directly to an iPhone or iPod Touch, and send that data to a health care provider. The meter, which is less than 2 inches long, connects to the device’s battery port, and can also be used when it is not attached to the phone.

The device stores 300 readings, while the Diabetes Manager app stores additional monitor readings. The free app is available through Apple’s App Store.

Patients with diabetes can review trends or share data with their health care team using the app. App features allow for graphs and statistics on glucose patterns, carbohydrate intake, insulin doses, and other aspects of care. It also produces color-coded score cards for easy identification of high or low glucose levels.

Specific data can be e-mailed to pharmacists or physicians using the app’s share function, improving communication with the patient’s health care team.
