Celebrating Women’s Health Month
Discover how pharmacists guide women through sensitive health needs, improving outcomes in every community.
May is Women’s Health Month, a time to reflect on the unique health challenges women face across every stage of life and to recognize the health care professionals who support them each day.
Women navigate a complex and ever-evolving health landscape, from reproductive health and hormonal changes to conditions that present differently in women from how they present in men. Throughout, pharmacists remain among the most accessible health care providers in the country. Whether in a community pharmacy, a hospital setting, or a specialty practice, pharmacists are often the first point of contact for women seeking guidance, reassurance, and trusted clinical expertise. That proximity matters enormously.
One area in which pharmacists make a tangible difference is the management of common conditions that are often undertreated or misunderstood. This month’s OTC Focus feature, written by Yvette C. Terrie, BSPharm, RPh, examines the critical role of pharmacists in counseling patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a condition affecting millions of women each year. As one of the most frequently self-treated conditions in women’s health, VVC presents a natural opportunity for pharmacists to engage patients at the point of care, help them distinguish between appropriate self-treatment and when to seek further evaluation, and ensure they are using OTC therapies safely and effectively.
Terrie’s piece underscores the fact that pharmacists are not simply dispensers of medication; they also are educators, advocates, and clinical partners. In the context of women’s health, that role takes on particular significance, given the sensitive nature of many conditions and the comfort patients may feel discussing them with a trusted pharmacist rather than making an appointment elsewhere.
As we observe Women’s Health Month, we encourage pharmacists to lean into that trust. The conversations happening at the pharmacy counter have a real, lasting impact on the health outcomes of women in every community.
We are honored to share this issue with our readers and grateful for the work pharmacists do every single day. Here’s to the professionals making a difference, and to the patients they serve.
As always, thank you for reading.
