Serving as a convenient reference for individuals seeking an overview of the laws and regulations that govern pharmacy practice in 53 jurisdictions, the updated 2015 Survey of Pharmacy Law is now available.

The Survey, produced in CD format, consists of four sections including a state-by-state overview of organizational law, licensing law, drug law, and census data. Newly added this year:

  • A question in Section 5, Registration for Interns/Preceptors/Training Sites, asks if the board reports pharmacist intern hours to other boards.
  • Two questions added to Section 16, Pharmacy Licensure Requirements, ask for information on licensing for sterile compounding practice.
  • A question in Section 20, Prescription Requirements, asks if states have mandatory prescription monitoring program reviewing requirements.
  • Two questions in Section 28, Miscellaneous State Pharmacy Laws, ask about medication therapy management for pharmacists outside of a pharmacy setting and board of pharmacy oversight of pharmacy benefit managers.

Updates for the 2015 Survey were graciously provided by the state boards of pharmacy. In addition to the boards’ support, NABP requested data from relevant health care associations for the Survey’sprescribing authority and dispensing authority laws in Sections 24 and 25, and laws pertaining to the possession of non-controlled legend drugs and possession of controlled substances in Sections 26 and 27.

The Survey can be purchased online for $195 by visiting the Publications section of the NABP website.

NABP provides the Survey to schools and colleges of pharmacy for distribution free of charge to their final-year pharmacy students. This is made possible through the generous grant of Purdue Pharma L.P.
