PANEL ENDORSES FLUMIST FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
The Advisory Committee on ImmunizationPractices has recommendedthe flu vaccine FluMist for use inchildren aged 2 to 5. The recommendationfollows an expanded approvalof the vaccine?s use in September bythe FDA.
The panel said the nasal influenzavaccine is an option and did not favorit over traditional flu shots. Childrenwith a history of asthma or wheezingshould get the flu shot, according tothe committee members. The panelalso voted for a government programthat pays for vaccines to extend itsFluMist coverage to the younger agegroup.
FluMist, made by MedImmune Inc,received FDA approval in 2003 for usein children ages 5 and older and inadults up to age 49.
