Chart Maps Stages of Sleep

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has designed a "Sleep Chart for Kids" that illustrates the different stages of sleep for newborns through school-aged children. The chart provides guidelines for the amount of sleep children should get at each stage of life. The NSF's 2004 Sleep in America poll found that, on average, children in every age group do not even meet the low end of the range suggested by experts for sleep in a 24-hour period.
