A new study has revealed 2 different ways that soy may help men. The researchers reported, in Biology of Reproduction (April 2004), that the proteinrich plant may prevent prostate cancer and male pattern baldness. They found that consuming soy creates equol, a molecule in the intestine. Equol is a natural and powerful blocker of a potent male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is involved in prostate cancer as well as male pattern baldness.

Kenneth Setchell, PhD, who first identified equol in humans 20 years ago, said, "These findings are of immense clinical importance because blocking the action of the potent androgen [male hormone] DHT has been one of the holy grails of the pharmaceutical industry as a strategy for treating prostate cancer and other related diseases."
