Bulking Up on Fiber Does Not Cause GI Problems

The benefits of a fiber-rich diet can be achieved without uncomfortable gastrointestinal side effects, a new study has shown. Approximately 1,300 women were asked to consume at least 30 g of fiber daily (35 g of fiber per day is recommended as the upper limit by the US National Cancer Institute). The increased fiber intake was not linked to bloating, upset stomach, or diarrhea, the study authors reported in the April 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
