EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Examine the physiological role of endogenous melatonin in regulating sleep and circadian rhythm
  • Explore the use of exogenous melatonin supplements as a sleep aid, including the mechanism of action, dosing, and common adverse effects associated with melatonin supplements
  • Compare and contrast the use of melatonin supplements versus other OTC and prescription sleep aids
  • Identify the role of the pharmacist as a patient educator and patient advocate in counseling and in making clinical recommendations about melatonin supplements
