The Health-Systems sector certainly did not allow any grass to grow under its feet in 2019.

As Andrew J. Donnelly, PharmD, MBA, FASHP, the director of pharmacy at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System in Chicago and a clinical professor and the associate dean for clinical affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, reports in our cover feature, this year’s hot topics included medication shortages, rising drug prices, legislation, a new gene therapy, the opioid epidemic, and the proliferation of cannabidiol products.

This issue of Pharmacy Times® Health-System Edition also provides information on treating cellulitis, vaccines and cancer treatment, nonopioids in the intensive care unit, new antimicrobials, and medical surveillance under USP <800>.

Helping patients may be all in a day’s work for pharmacists, but we know that pharmacists are truly heroes. To that end, Pharmacy Times® and Parata Systems celebrated the winners of the 10th Annual 2019 Next-Generation Pharmacist® Awards on October 25, during a ceremony at the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado held concurrently with the 2019 National Community Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. Pharmacy Times® and Parata Systems, the industry’s most comprehensive pharmacy tech- nology solutions provider, hosted more than 160 attendees, including event sponsors, other clients, and Pharmacy Times® associates—and, of course, the honorees and their families.

The big winner of the night was Daniel S. Fuchs, RPh, pharmacist and owner of Fuchs Family Pharmacies, who received the 2019 Next-Generation Pharmacist® of the Year and Entrepreneur 2019 award.

Meanwhile, Sarah L. Anderson, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, BCACP, associate professor and clinical pharmacy specialist at the University of Colorado and Denver Health, was honored with the Health-System Pharmacist award.

The Next-Generation Pharmacist® awards recognize exceptional pharmacists, pharmacy students, and technicians who have gone above and beyond in caring for patients and advancing the profession and are future innovators, leaders, and pioneers. Since its beginning in 2010, the awards program has generated more than 3000 peer nominations across all 50 states and honored nearly 300 pharmacy leaders.

Thank you for reading! We can hardly wait to see what is on the horizon for the health-system arena in 2020.
