Trending News Today: Cannabis May Be Linked to Higher Risk of Complications in Diabetes

A new study showed that individuals with type 1 diabetes may be more likely to develop potentially fatal complications when using cannabis, Reuters reported. According to the article, the researchers surveyed 450 patients with type 1 diabetes in Colorado, 30% of whom used cannabis. Cannabis users had approximately twice the risk of experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis and had average A1c readings of 8.4% compared with 7.6% in non-cannabis users, the article reported.

Foamix Pharmaceuticals announced that its experimental foam treatment for rosacea met the main goal of 2 late-stage clinical trials, Reuters reported. According to the article, the trials enrolled more than 1000 patients with papulopastular rosacea, which causes lesions to break out on the face, with the most commonly reported adverse effects being upper respiratory tract infections. The treatment, called FMX103, significantly reduced inflammatory lesions compared with a foam without the antibiotic minocycline, the article reported.

A recent survey found that families often share antibiotics that were prescribed for someone else, Reuters reported. According to the article, 454 parents in the survey said they had leftover antibiotics in the house and more than one-third of those parents said they had redistributed the antibiotics to others, including children and adults. Approximately 16% of the survey respondents indicated they gave their children medications intended for adults, the article reported.
