Oncology Pharmacists Play Essential Role in Oncology Care, Managing New Treatments

Cynthia Lynch, MD, breast cancer program clinical advisor with Cancer Treatment Centers of America, said oncology pharmacists are vital team members who can help ensure optimal treatment and safety for patients with breast cancer.

In a recent interview with Pharmacy Times, Cynthia Lynch, MD, breast cancer program clinical advisor with Cancer Treatment Centers of America, said oncology pharmacists are vital team members who can help ensure optimal treatment and safety for patients with breast cancer.

One important opportunity for oncology pharmacists is helping oncologists and other health care professionals keep up with a rapidly evolving treatment landscape. In human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer, specifically, Lynch said there have been several exciting developments over the past couple of years. She works specifically with a pharmacist who specializes in clinical trial management, which she said is a vital partnership.

In addition to keeping abreast of new developments, pharmacists can help monitor patients for adverse effects and can communicate patients’ needs to oncologists and other care team members, especially since pharmacists may have more contact with patients in between clinic visits, Lynch said.
