Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors Transform Frontline Endometrial Cancer Care

Adding immune checkpoint inhibitors to carboplatin and paclitaxel has become the new frontline standard for advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer.

In this interview with Pharmacy Times, Erin Zacholski, PharmD, BCOP, assistant professor, VCU School of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacy specialist, gynecologic oncology, VCU Health, Massey Cancer Center, discusses how immune checkpoint inhibitors combined with carboplatin (Paraplatin; Bristol-Myers Squibb) and paclitaxel (Taxol; Bristol-Myers Squibb) are reshaping frontline treatment for recurrent and metastatic endometrial cancer. She reviews the FDA-approved use of pembrolizumab (Keytruda; Merck), dostarlimab (Jemperli; GlaxoSmithKline), and durvalumab (Imfinzi; AstraZeneca) in various mismatch repair populations and highlights the significant progression-free and overall survival benefits observed in pivotal trials such as RUBY, NRG-GY018, and DUO-E. Zacholski also outlines important immune-related adverse events pharmacists should monitor, including hypothyroidism, dermatologic toxicities, gastrointestinal effects, and less common liver and lung complications.
