PRESS RELEASE

April 18, 2013 (WASHINGTON, DC) — The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) recently published Pharmacy Ethics: A Foundation for Professional Practice, a textbook designed to help student pharmacists understand the ethical decision-making process and to show how the principles of the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists can be applied in professional practice.

The book features more than 40 cases and ethical situations that encourage class discussion. Commentaries following the case studies help students internalize ethical concepts and form their own set of professional practice values. Used across the curriculum in pharmacy practice courses and experiential settings, Pharmacy Ethics: A Foundation for Professional Practice (ISBN 978-1-58212-179-6; softbound; 210 pages; $39.95 [$32.00 for APhA members]) will give students directed practice in applying ethical principles and will allow them to develop skills in problem-solving and critical thinking.

Authors Robert A. Buerki, PhD, RPh, and Louis D. Vottero, MS, have many years of experience teaching and writing about pharmacy ethics, including Ethical Responsibility in Pharmacy Practice (2002). Buerki is Professor Emeritus, College of Pharmacy, The Ohio State University, where he continues to teach pharmacy ethics. Vottero is Professor of Pharmacy Emeritus, College of Pharmacy, Ohio Northern University. The authors received the 2006 Edmund D. Pellegrino Medal presented by the Institute for Healthcare Ethics and Law of Samford University for their contributions to health care ethics.
