Diclofenac sodium gel, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis inflammation and pain, is making the switch from prescription-only to OTC. The FDA first approved the gel in 2007, and the product is indicated specifically for joints responsive to topical treatment, particularly the feet, hands, and knees. The gel is not intended for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to work. The OTC approval is based on clinical data demonstrating the drug’s efficacy in and safety for self-medication use.
