ASHP today recognized the work of the late Jerod M. Loeb, Ph.D., a tireless patient safety advocate, with the ASHP Board of Directors Award of Honor. Loeb's widow, Sherri, accepted the award during the opening session of ASHP's Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Dr. Loeb passed away in 2013 from metastatic prostate cancer.

That's the word from experts who caution that some medications taken over the counter can have a negative impact on blood pressure. If patients are unknowingly taking medications that elevate blood pressure, it could undermine efforts to keep blood pressure in a safe range.

Researchers at the American Epilepsy Society meeting reported important strides in the understanding of epilepsy, including identification of new therapeutic targets in the brain, as discussed by Esther Krook-Magnuson, PhD, as well as improved understanding of the factors involved in sudden death of patients with epilepsy, and a greater recognition of the benefits of neurosurgery in patients with epilepsy.
