The Pharmacist's Transition to USP 800

In this clip, Jeffrey Lombardo, PharmD, who is the executive patient safety officer for University at Buffalo's patient safety organization Empire State Patient Safety Assurance Network, explains the challenges pharmacists will face in transitioning to USP 800. Lombardo spoke as part of a safe handling of hazardous drugs panel held simultaneously with the 36th Annual Chemotherapy Foundation Symposium CFS®. held November 7 to 9, 2018, at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York, New York this week.

The adoption of USP800 is really posing some challenges for pharmacists and employers. If you look back at 797, those [recommendations] are really around sterility, but USP800 focuses in on the health care worker and the associations. So, those that receive the product, that store the product, that compound the product, how we administer the drug to the patient at the bedside or in the chair, and where we dispose them. As you can see this is an encompassing task and a lot of policy procedures and a lot of thought has to be put into this to make sure you have the right guidance documents in place.
