Each March, we recognize National Nutrition Month as a timely reminder that food choices, nutrient balance, and lifestyle behaviors profoundly shape patient health across every stage of life. For pharmacists, it also serves as an opportunity to highlight a growing area of impact: advancing nutrition awareness, counseling, and evidence-based guidance in everyday practice.

Nutrition is often viewed as the domain of dietitians and primary care teams, but pharmacists are uniquely positioned to fill critical gaps. Patients regularly turn to their local pharmacist with questions about supplements, vitamins, chronic disease management, and the links between nutrition and medication effectiveness. The accessibility of pharmacists—often without an appointment and embedded directly within communities—creates countless touchpoints to influence healthier choices.

This month’s feature article by Allison Kang, PharmD, underscores an important truth: chronic conditions are deeply interconnected with lifestyle choices, and pharmacists play a central role in bridging those connections. Asthma, for example, is often viewed solely through the lens of inhalers and action plans, yet nutrition, weight management, and exposure to dietary triggers can significantly influence symptom control. Pharmacists are well equipped to identify these relationships, counsel patients on modifiable factors, and reinforce proper inhaler technique, adherence, and monitoring. By pairing clinical expertise with practical nutrition guidance, pharmacists help patients navigate the complex drivers of chronic respiratory disease and ultimately improve long-term outcomes.

At the same time, pharmacists are increasingly called upon to help patients make sense of rapidly evolving vaccine policies and recommendations. Conflicting headlines, changing eligibility criteria, and shifting public health guidance have created substantial confusion for patients seeking trustworthy answers. Pharmacists play a vital role in clarifying current recommendations, ensuring patients understand what is appropriate for their age and risk level, and addressing hesitation with empathy and evidence. This responsibility reflects the broader reality of pharmacy practice today: Patients rely on pharmacists to translate complexity into clarity.

Pharmacy Times remains committed to supporting this evolution. Throughout March and beyond, we will continue to highlight research, practice insights, and patient-focused strategies that showcase how pharmacists are strengthening communities and reshaping the future of care.

As always, thank you for reading.
