ASHP has selected Sophia R. Chhay as its 2017-2018 Executive Fellow in Association Leadership and Management. The yearlong fellowship (formerly known as the ASHP Executive Residency), provides one Executive Fellow with hands-on training under the guidance of ASHP executives in all facets of not-for-profit association leadership and management.

Chhay is a PGY1 pharmacy resident at Erie Veterans Administration Medical Center in Erie, Pa., and earned her Pharm.D. from the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy in 2016. She was an active leader within her local Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists and completed a student rotation at ASHP.

Chhay currently serves on the ASHP Council on Education and Workforce Development. She participated in ASHP’s Policy Week 2016 and Legislative Day on Capitol Hill, and was involved with the review and development of several ASHP policies.

“We are extremely pleased to have Sophia join us as the 2017-2018 ASHP Executive Fellow,” said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, Pharm.D., Sc.D. (Hon.), FASHP. “Sophia’s engagement as a volunteer and her passion for serving members and advancing pharmacy practice make her a perfect fit for this highly regarded program. The entire ASHP staff team looks forward to mentoring Sophia and helping her achieve her goals as a future leader.”

ASHP’s postgraduate training in Association Leadership and Management was created in 1968 for those interested in a career in association management. Graduates of ASHP’s training program have gone on to serve in leadership roles in associations, government, for-profit corporations, academia, philanthropy, and various other sectors.

Housed at the Joseph A. Oddis Global Headquarters of ASHP in Bethesda, Md., the program trains pharmacists in the many facets of association management, including the following:

  • Executive Leadership
  • Member Engagement
  • Advocacy
  • Policy Analysis and Development
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Publishing
  • Strategic Planning
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Governance
  • Accreditation

Chhay will begin her fellowship in July and will be engaged in an array of projects and activities throughout the year that will serve as the foundation of her training.
