Addressing and Overcoming Vaccine Hesitancy in Patients
A panelist discusses how pharmacists can address vaccine hesitancy by collaborating with prescribers who recommend against vaccination through education and in-services, and by reframing patients’ concerns about being “too young or healthy” as opportunities to build robust immunity while their immune system is strong.
When patients report that their doctors advised against vaccination, pharmacists should investigate rather than accept this at face value, as misunderstandings about frequently changing guidelines often contribute to provider hesitancy. This presents an educational opportunity for pharmacist-prescriber collaboration through targeted outreach, educational seminars, and in-service training for health care teams. Such collaborative efforts can address knowledge gaps and ensure consistent, evidence-based vaccination recommendations across the health care continuum.
Patients claiming they are “too young,” “too healthy,” or concerned about vaccine pain require strategic reframing that positions their robust health as an advantage for vaccination. Pharmacists should emphasize that strong immune systems build better immunity when vaccinated, making the present moment optimal for protection rather than waiting until health declines. This prevention-focused messaging helps patients understand that current good health enhances rather than negates the need for vaccination.
Addressing pain concerns requires honest discussions about common side effects based on real patient experiences, coupled with practical management strategies that demonstrate that these reactions are temporary and manageable. By focusing on protection during peak immune system function vs waiting for potential future complications, pharmacists can shift patient perspectives from immediate discomfort concerns to long-term health preservation, ultimately encouraging proactive rather than reactive health care decisions.
