2016 Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists

Randy McDonough is co-owner and director of clinical services at Towncrest Pharmacy, where he has developed and implemented a community pharmacy practice that focuses on patient care services.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Implementing the kind of practice that Pharmacist Eugene White inspired me to develop, proving that pharmacists can enhance patient outcomes, improve utilization of health care resources, and reduce health care spend.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Pharmacist Eugene White and his vision for community pharmacy has inspired me the most. I have the original article I first read about him from the early 1980s.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

To be the best pharmacist I can be, provide my patients with the best care possible, and work collaboratively with other providers to ensure my patients are achieving their therapeutic outcomes with safe and effective therapy.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Within 10 years, pharmacists will be interventionists—identifying and resolving drug therapy problems, working collaboratively with other health care providers, counseling and educating patients, and documenting their patient care activities.

Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group Seattle, Washington

As the CEO of Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group, Ryan Oftebro has helped to establish an innovation lab at which pharmacists and residents can work together to develop and implement new pharmacy ideas, such as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEp) clinic, transitions- of-care innovations, and a naloxone program.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

I believe my greatest achievement is really in bringing amazing people together, developing high-functioning teams, and cultivating creative ideas that make a difference.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Our people. I truly believe that we have attracted the best people in the business. I particularly love our residents and pharmacy students, who bring incredible energy and a can-do attitude to everything they do.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe that pharmacists, as the most accessible health care providers, can make a positive impact on the health of our communities. But we have to have the courage to push outside our comfort zones and be willing to practice differently.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Our profession has the opportunity to transform itself and make an incredible impact on health care as we attain provider status.

FAPhA, FASCP Osterhaus Pharmacy Maquoteka, Iowa

Matthew Osterhaus grew up working in his father’s pharmacy, Osterhaus Pharmacy, and saw the impact he had on the lives of his patients and the role he played as a leader in his community. Matthew’s passion is instilling the desire to be change agents in student pharmacists and the residents he has trained.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Any significant achievements I have been a part of stem from working with great pharmacy teams, helping patients reach a tobacco-cessation goal, and conducting medication therapy management.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

My innovative, caring staff that finds a way to make a difference every day. My parents, who are the poster children for lifelong learning. My pharmacist wife, who feels no professional challenge is too great.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

If it is good for the patient, it is good for the pharmacy.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Pharmacists will be the health care provider that patients and other health team members count on for medication management in all care settings.
