Capt. Lisa Tonrey is an advocate for both patients and the profession of pharmacy. In her career of service, she has been dedicated and caring, with a mission to serve vulnerable communities. As a public health practitioner, her fervent belief in prevention allowed her to push a national agenda of pharmacists as immunizers.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

I served a 22-year active duty pharmacy career as a US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Officer. I worked with people suffering from debilitating diseases, and my career helped shape my character.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I am inspired by scriptures for encouragement and from people who do good deeds for others. I am also inspired by helping patients improve their health and celebrating with them when we see results.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

To use the talents, gifts, and blessings I have to be a blessing to others. As a health provider, I help people and work with them to reach their goals, while inspiring others to do the same.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

As our baby boomers age, as our country experiences a dearth of available physicians, and as diseases and outbreaks become more prevalent, pharmacists are and will be a critical piece of the puzzle.

For Karen Kier, pharmacy blends her interests in health care sciences and patient interactions. Kier’s high school chemistry teacher nominated her for a summer pharmacy program held at Ohio State University, and she loved every minute of the experience and knew that pharmacy was her passion.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

My greatest achievement in pharmacy is the reward in teaching the next generation of pharmacists. I hope that my passion for the profession serves as a role model for them.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

I’ve had amazing mentors within the pharmacy profession who have encouraged me to be innovative and to have grit and determination. My parents have also constantly supported me, and my husband and daughter have been a constant source of inspiration.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe that every patient and every student is your family member. I treat my students and patients as I would want my family treated.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

My vision is that we become an essential component of all integrated health care teams and that we are recognized as valued members in all aspects.

As the national director of pharmacy affairs with Walgreens Boots Alliance, Daniel Luce has worked to prove the value of pharmacists to the health care system. During his time on the board of pharmacy in Wisconsin, he helped to advance the practice, shaping rules and regulations to protect the public.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Giving back to the profession and serving on the American Pharmacists Association Foundation Board. I’ve helped advance the role of the pharmacy professional by never accepting the status quo.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

My biggest inspiration is my family. They inspire me to be a better person. Also, the many mentors I’ve worked with during my career. They’ve all taught me something.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Always operate with the highest level of integrity. If you are known by the bond of your word, people will trust you over the long haul.

VISION FOR PHARMACY

Pharmacists will continue to have increasing value in the health care system. To make that happen, we need to focus on high-level cognitive services and utilize our other pharmacy employees in new and different ways.
