The collaboration between SIDP and Pharmacy Times® will serve as a link between infectious disease experts and a platform to disseminate important and well-timed information to health-system and retail pharmacists through print and digital media.
As multidrug-resistant organisms become an increasingly important public health threat and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services begins to require antimicrobial stewardship as an accreditation standard, expert knowledge on infectious diseases is essential for pharmacists.
“By its very nature, the specialty of infectious diseases is constantly changing as pathogens express resistance to currently available drugs and new pathogens emerge,” said SIDP President Jason C. Gallagher, PharmD, FCCP, FIDSA, BCPS. “This partnership allows the readership of Pharmacy Times® to benefit from the expertise of SIDP members, who are specialists in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy and antimicrobial stewardship.”
Mainstream media information on infectious diseases may not be accurate or up-to-date. Part of SIDP’s mission is to ensure that this information, such as updates to guidelines and new threats (e.g., the Zika virus), is interpreted properly by experts.
