U.S. News & World Report and Pharmacy Times to Name Top Health Product Recommendations
New collaboration will bring pharmacists' over-the-counter health care products to consumers
New York, NY (June 11, 2012)—U.S. News & World Report, the nation's leading publisher of quality rankings, and Pharmacy Times, the pharmacy industry's leading publication, have announced a new collaboration that will identify the top pharmacist-recommended over-the-counter (OTC) products for consumers.
For the past 16 years, Pharmacy Times has researched and compiled pharmacists' insights and preferences in its annual companion publication, titled OTC Guide. Prior to the U.S. News & World Report alliance, this yearly supplement to Pharmacy Times had been a resource provided solely to professionals in the health care industry.
Thanks to this new collaboration, however, consumers nationwide soon will have insight into pharmacists' go-to brands in more than 150 categories, from head (migraine, allergy relief and cough/cold) to toe (joint pain and foot cream).
In gathering OTC data, Pharmacy Times conducted a proprietary annual survey that reaches a significant portion of the publication's 170,000 pharmacist readers to collect feedback about 14 distinct therapeutic health areas comprising 162 product categories. This research results in the evaluation and ranking of more than 1,000 OTC products.
One of U.S. News' signature franchises is its "Best" series of guides in key consumer decision areas such as colleges, graduate schools, mutual funds, cars, travel and more. These guides include extensive offerings in the health areas, including rankings of children's hospitals, adult hospitals, doctors and health plans. In working with Pharmacy Times, U.S. News now extends this series to the area of Health Products.
Through U.S. News' website and its portfolio of print outlets, consumers now will have unprecedented--and searchable--access to the wealth of information produced by the Pharmacy Times annual study. For example, consumers suffering from a cold or flu now can use this resource to find the top pharmacist-recommended cold remedy, cough suppressant, and decongestant as well as 16 other categories in the "Cough, Cold, Allergies" therapeutic health area.
"U.S. News has a rich history of providing consumers credible, quality information that influences important decisions," said Brian Kelly, Editor of U.S. News & World Report. "Combining our experience with the expertise of Pharmacy Times allows us to give our readers valuable recommendations to help them take better care of themselves and their families."
Pharmacy Times offers a suite of print and online content for pharmacists across the country, providing practical, clinical information they can use in their everyday practices when counseling patients and interacting with physicians. Select articles from Pharmacy Times are eligible for continuing education credit by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.
Pharmacy Times also will collaborate with U.S. News on supplemental, co-sponsored articles and other content to complement the OTC ranking results.
"As the most accessible health care provider, the pharmacist is in a unique position to help consumers make educated choices about which over-the-counter products to purchase," said Tighe Blazier, president of Pharmacy Times. "By working with U.S. News & World Report, we're able to provide consumers with this treasure trove of pharmacists' expertise and advice."
In late June, the 2012 pharmacist-recommended OTC products will be announced, and soon thereafter consumers will be able to find more than 150 product categories on both the U.S. News and Pharmacy Times websites and in the publications' print guides.
The iconic "U.S. News & World Report #1 Recommended" badge graphic will make its debut throughout the 2012 OTC Guide.
