Unpacking the 2025 ACC/AHA Pulmonary Embolism Guidelines With a Thrombosis Pharmacist

Burnett, who served as the only pharmacist on the guideline writing committee, shares her experience contributing to the hemodynamic management and anticoagulation sections. Together, Burnett and Beavers highlight the guideline's new A-through-E risk stratification schema, the expanded role of low-molecular-weight heparin over unfractionated heparin, and the growing opportunity for pharmacists to lead outpatient deep vein thrombosis management and antithrombosis stewardship programs. They also preview the upcoming HI-PEITHO trial, which is set to be presented at ACC 2026 and may further shape how intermediate- to high-risk patients with pulmonary embolism are managed.
