Ashley Huntsberry and Joselyn Benabe from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences competed against a record number of participants to win the 19th annual ASHP National Clinical Skills Competition SM, held December 7, 2014, during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, CA.

Katherine Brumfield and Matthew Wallace from Mercer University College of Pharmacy took second place, and Erin Christensen and Rebecca Call from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy placed third.

“We are extremely proud of these impressive students and future patient care providers,” said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, Pharm.D., Sc.D. (Hon.), FASHP. “ASHP is pleased to conduct the national clinical skills competition aimed at honing the skills of future clinical pharmacy leaders.”

ASHP Research and Education Foundation CEO Stephen J. Allen, M.S., FASHP, went on to say that the Foundation’s support of the competition “is an important investment in the future of patient care and pharmacy practice.” The competition is administered by ASHP’s Pharmacy Student Forum, sponsored by the ASHP Foundation, and supported by Lexicomp of Wolters Kluwer Health.

A record 127 teams who won preliminary competitions at their local schools of pharmacy participated in the activity (see below for full listing). During the competition, students demonstrate their skills by assessing patient information and current therapy, identifying and prioritizing drug therapy problems, identifying treatment goals, and recommending a pharmacist’s care plan.
