Pharmacist-Led Education and Support in Multiple Sclerosis Care
Pharmacists play a crucial role in educating patients with multiple sclerosis about treatment options, adverse effects, and navigating insurance challenges.
Kiranpal Singh Sangha, PharmD, discusses the important role pharmacists play in supporting patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) by providing education and guidance throughout treatment. He emphasizes that pharmacists help patients navigate therapy options by educating them on dosing, administration, storage requirements, and expected adverse effects. Given that many MS therapies have extensive adverse effect profiles, he notes the value of highlighting the most common or clinically relevant adverse effects. Sangha also underscores the role pharmacists play in addressing insurance barriers, including prior authorization requirements, by setting expectations early. In addition, pharmacists support patients by discussing disease progression, treatment outcomes to monitor, and when to reach out to their health care providers.
