Integrating Pharmacists Into Sports Medicine Teams to Enhance Athlete Care and Safety
There is a growing need to integrate pharmacists into sports medicine teams, where their expertise in medication safety, chronic disease management, and supplements can significantly enhance athlete care and performance.
At the Sports Pharmacy Summit, Pharmacy Times spoke with Madeline Camejo, PharmD, MS, CPEL, about the evolving role of pharmacists within sports medicine teams and the importance of clearly defining their value. Camejo noted that one of the biggest challenges is a lack of awareness around what pharmacists bring to the table, particularly in medication safety, chronic disease management, and supplement oversight. She emphasized that pharmacists are uniquely positioned to support athletes with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and hypertension, ensuring therapies are optimized without compromising performance. Additionally, she highlighted that successful integration depends on strong clinical skills, effective communication, and alignment within multidisciplinary teams, ultimately providing a competitive advantage on and off the field.
