
From Pioneer to Progress: The “Godfather of Sports Pharmacy” on the Field’s Evolution

In an interview with Pharmacy Times, Robert Nickell, RPh, FACA, FAPO, reflects on the evolution of sports pharmacy from a largely unrecognized niche to a growing, specialized field driven by passion and clinical expertise. Once one of the only pharmacists identifying in this space, he highlights how the profession has expanded globally, with more than 100 pharmacists now actively practicing in sports settings. He emphasizes the critical role pharmacists play in addressing medication safety challenges, particularly around polypharmacy and the misuse of common agents like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
