Expert: COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters May Be Unnecessary This Year

Although pharmaceutical companies have already begun developing COVID-19 vaccine boosters, Michael Haydock of Informa Pharma Intelligence said boosters may not be necessary in the fall of 2021.

In a recent interview with Pharmacy Times, Michael Haydock of Informa Pharma Intelligence discussed the emerging Delta variant, declining vaccination rates, and how they could all intersect during the upcoming flu season. Haydock said that although the Delta variant may be more transmissible, data thus far suggests that the currently available vaccines are still efficacious.

Although pharmaceutical companies have already begun developing COVID-19 vaccine boosters, Haydock said boosters may not be necessary in the fall of 2021. Instead, he said resources might be better spent pushing vaccines to countries that have not received first doses yet.
