Medication Pearl of the Day: Ondansetron Hydrochloride (Zofran)
Indication: Zofran is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting.
Insight:
- Dosing: Take 1 tablet every day or as needed prescribed by the provider.
- Dosage forms: Tablets 4 mg and 8 mg (orally disintegrating tablets available), oral solution 4 mg/5 mL.
- Adverse events (AEs): The most common AEs in adults are headache, malaise/fatigue, constipation, and diarrhea.
- Mechanism of action: Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist.
