GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Cancer: Considerations for Specialty Pharmacists
Specialty pharmacists can help patients with cancer weigh the benefits and risks of GLP-1 receptor agonists as use expands and new evidence emerges.
GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have rapidly become an important part of clinical practice. Initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, these agents are now widely used for obesity and have expanded into additional indications, including cardiovascular risk reduction, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and obstructive sleep apnea. As use of medications such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, dulaglutide, and liraglutide continues to grow, specialty pharmacists are increasingly likely to encounter patients receiving these therapies during or around cancer treatment.
