Could GLP-1 Medications Influence Breast Cancer Survivorship? Researchers Discuss Emerging Data

In this interview with Pharmacy Times, Bernard Fuemmeler, PhD, MPH, Professor and Gordon D. Ginder, MD Chair in Cancer Research, and Kristina Tatum, PsyD, MS, Instructor at VCU School of Public Health, discuss findings from a large observational study evaluating the association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and breast cancer outcomes. Analyzing electronic health record data from more than 840,000 patients over a 10-year observation period, the researchers observed associations between GLP-1 use and improved survival outcomes, as well as lower recurrence rates among women with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Although the findings are promising, the retrospective observational design prevents conclusions about causation and highlights the need for randomized clinical trials and additional mechanistic research.
