Oregon Facility Automates Syringe Preparation
In an effort to accommodate its newfacility, Oregon Health & ScienceUniversity (OHSU) will implement For-Health Technologies' IntelliFill i.v. roboticsystem to automate its growing syringepreparationworkload. The system computerizesthe compounding and labelingof intravenous (IV) medication doses insyringes at speeds not often possibleusing manual processes. IntelliFill i.v. usesbar-code scanning, vision systems, andweight confirmation steps and deliverspatient-labeled bar-coded syringes preparedin an ISO Class 4 environment.
"With the opening of our new facility, our syringe volumes and workloads forour operating rooms and pediatrics haveincreased dramatically. Due to this expansion,we need an automated IV systemthat will enable us to maintain our highstandard of patient safety and increaseour capacity without adding staff," explainedGae Ryan, PharmD, director ofpharmacy services at OHSU. "WithIntelliFill i.v., we have an automatedmeans of preparing our IV medications inan aseptic environment with multipleprocess controls, enabling greater efficienciesand quality of care in both thepharmacy and at the patient's bedside."
