OMACOR AND AMICAR STILL ARE BEING CONFUSED
Reliant Pharmaceuticals Inc has warned pharmacistsabout recent confusion between its Omacor(omega-3-acid ethyl esters) capsules and XanodynePharmaceuticals Inc's Amicar (aminocaproic acid)tablets. Omacor's manufacturer has informed pharmaciststhat telephone orders for its drug continueto be "misunderstood and dispensed" as Amicar.
FDA-approved Omacor is indicated as an adjunct to diet for thereduction of very high triglyceride levels. Amicar, however, is indicatedfor enhancing hemostasis when fibrinolysis contributes to bleeding. In certain patients, Amicar is prescribed for oral use to controlacute or chronic bleeding syndromes.
Reliant issued a similar warning in November 2005. The companysaid that it was developing a "shelf talker" for pharmacists "to helpprevent any more medication errors." For more information, visitwww.omacorrx.com.
