Food for the Heart

The foods people eat can play a major role in increasing or alleviating high blood cholesterol. Here are tips for heart-healthy eating from the Southcoast Health System:

  • Eat fewer foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol
  • Buy skim or low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt, and reduced-fat cheeses
  • Consume more fish and poultry
  • Trim fat from meat
  • Limit egg yolks; substitute 2 egg whites for 1 whole egg
  • Use less salt and fat; season food with herbs and spices instead of using sauces, gravies, and butter
