Lisa Tonrey, MHA, RPh, PhC, FAPhA, Capt. USPHS (ret), Awarded Top Honor; Pharmacy Leaders Celebrated at Next-Generation Pharmacist Awards Gala

PLAINSBORO, N.J. (August 8, 2016) - Pharmacy Times® and Parata Systems, founding partners of the Next-Generation Pharmacist® awards, congratulate the 2016 winners named at Saturday night’s awards gala at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Lisa Tonrey, MHA, RPh, PhC, FAPhA, Capt. USPHS (ret), pharmacist and medical commodities advisor with the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, received the evening’s top honor: 2016 Next-Generation Pharmacist. Tonrey will be featured on the cover of the August 2016 issue of Pharmacy Times, which will contain a profile of her award-winning contributions to the industry.

“Congratulations to all our 2016 Next-Generation Pharmacists finalists and winners,” said DJ Dougherty, CEO of Parata Systems. “We welcome this year’s award recipients to an esteemed group of more than 150 pharmacy professionals who have been recognized since 2010. This year’s winners represent the outstanding contributions of our industry’s finest pharmacists, technicians, student pharmacists and industry advocates.”

More than 500 Next-Generation Pharmacist nominations were received across 11 award categories. An independent panel of esteemed judges evaluated all nominated entries based on adherence to professional standards, experience as it relates to each category and advancement of the profession. Judges named the three highest scoring entries in each category as finalists and the top-scoring entry as the category winner. The overall Next-Generation Pharmacist was selected from among the winners of the 11 pharmacist categories.

“The 2016 Next-Generation Pharmacist represents the best of what we all hope to achieve as pharmacists,” said Pharmacy Times editor-in-chief Troy Trygstad, PharmD, PhD, MBA, who chaired the independent panel of judges that reviewed nominations. “Lisa is dedicated and caring, and sees it as her mission to help serve vulnerable communities. Lisa envisions pharmacists as a critical piece of the health care delivery system in an industry facing a multitude of challenges, including physician shortages and an aging population.”

Tonrey, winner of the Lifetime Leadership category, was honored for her advocacy as a public health practitioner and her dedication to championing causes, including successfully advancing a national agenda of pharmacists as immunizers. Tonrey led a 22-year active duty pharmacy career as a U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Officer. Motivated by supporting patients who are taking efforts to improve their health, Tonrey helps patients reach their goals and inspires others to do the same.

“The recipients of this year’s Next-Generation Pharmacist awards are shining examples of what we should all aspire to in the pharmacy industry,” said Brian Haug, president of the Pharmacy and Rare Disease franchises of Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., which publishes Pharmacy Times. “Today’s winners represent every pharmacist’s mission to deliver the best patient care amidst the modern realities of pharmacy practice in our complex health care environment. It is a privilege and honor for us to illuminate the best of the profession.”
