This study presents the first information available regarding enablement and use by state and area characteristics of electronic prescribing of controlled substances by prescribers and pharmacy systems in from an e-prescribing network.

This study evaluates whether provider adoption and use of formulary decision support for e-prescribing are directly associated with significant prescriber and patient behavior change.

E-prescribing adoption has increased dramatically over the past decade. This study provides empirical evidence that utilization among adopters continues to increase, suggesting application “stickiness.”
