New Jersey Society of Health-System Pharmacy Hosts 2nd Annual Pharmacy Leader and Pharmacy Technician Symposium

On October 5, 2024, the New Jersey Society of Health-System Pharmacy (NJSHP) proudly held its 2nd Annual Pharmacy Leader and Pharmacy Technician Symposium, welcoming over 40 pharmacy practitioners and technicians from across the state. Organized for the second consecutive year, the event served as a vital forum for networking, professional development, and continuing education, all within the collaborative setting of the RWJ Health Facility.

Participants engaged in 3 vendor exhibits, secured continuing education credits, and exchanged ideas with peers in a dynamic environment. A well-balanced mix of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians gathered to explore critical topics in compliance, education, and regulation in pharmacy compounding—a testament to the symposium’s growing impact since its inaugural event.

Expert Presentations on Compliance and Regulation

The symposium opened with a compelling presentation by Lou Diorio, RPh, FAPhA, from LDT Health Solutions, who spoke on “The Designated Person—A USP <797> Approach to Compliance.” Attendees gained in-depth knowledge of the designated person’s responsibilities under USP <797>, including intersections with USP <795>, <800>, and <825>. The talk emphasized the importance of this role in maintaining sterile and non-sterile compounding compliance, a cornerstone of safe pharmacy operations.

Following Diorio, Mitch G. Sobel, BSPharm, RPh, MAS, FASHP, CPGx, director of pharmacy services at University Hospital, delivered “Legal Updates in Pharmacy Compounding Rules,” covering recent regulatory changes and compliance requirements enforced by USP standards and the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy (NJBOP). Sobel highlighted the legal distinctions between the Pharmacist-in-Charge and the Designated Person, stressing the accountability each role holds in ensuring pharmacy compliance.

Community Dialogue and Networking

The engaging presentations led to productive discussions with both speakers and members of the NJSHP Board of Directors, diving into topics such as standard operating procedure (SOP) development, USP compliance, and state-level regulatory updates. These discussions enriched attendees’ understanding while contributing to their continuing education.

The event concluded with a networking roundtable led by Berna Sweeney, CPhT, director of the NJSHP council on technician affairs. Attendees exchanged perspectives on the updated USP standards and connected with members of the Technician Affairs Council, rounding out a day filled with knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

With over 75 years of dedicated service, NJSHP continues to be recognized for its contributions to the pharmacy profession, adding another successful event to its distinguished history.
